SAL n' BOB: A STUDY
Sal Velluto and I were first paired up as an art team on BLOODSHOT#8 at Acclaim Comics on
September 1997. There is an interesting progression over the eight issues we did together as I
started out inking mostly in brush until Sal turned me onto using markers and more quill in the
work. While the inked work was generally clean in style the later issues were not nearly as slick
as the first couple. You can see several pages for yourself over at Joe Petrilak's site on this link

Our next stage was 'grim&gritty'. For
our unpublished DEATHLOK sampler
(fall '98) Sal asked me to put my brush
away, use solely markers and quill, play
up the kinetic sketchiness and go nuts
with textures and special FX. You
can see all 5 pages and the sixth try-
out page
When we began our run on BLACK
PANTHER with issue 13(summer '99), we
decided to try the sketchy, grim&gritty
approach but not as extreme. Brush was
used but sparingly. We also introduced the
infamous 'squigglies' as they were dubbed
by readers. This approach was to match the
expected color style the editor at the time
described to us would be applied.... ....and that color style was never used.
Sal and I reverted back to the more
traditional style by issue 17(winter '99),
thickening contour lines over time to
increase weight, depth and spatial re-
lationships within the art and also pulling
the brush out for some close up detail
weights.
For the 10 page story in JLA: 80 PAGE
GIANT # 2 (summer '99) we decided to
return to the traditional approach but
now to bring every tool into the mix to
get the widest variety of weights and
textures.

Inks of same page. I was still trying to
get the 'squigglies' as thin as Sal wanted,
something I didn't get right until next issue,
the last issue we used them, of course. I
was pleased with the variety of textures used
like smudging, spattering and duo-tone. Inks of same page. Special FX include
smudging, spattering, electric eraser,
and zip-a-tone.
